Your health week is over. What about next week?

Health Week is not the program

Every year, many companies organize their health and wellness week, complete with talks, challenges, and assessments. However, a review of 1,390 workplace wellness studies found that no single initiative guarantees reduced absenteeism or improved productivity on its own. This article explains why health and wellness week is merely the first step of a wellness program, not the complete strategy.

What science says—and it's a bit uncomfortable

A recent review, which integrated 14 reviews and 1,390 studies on workplace wellness programs, identified 45 different types of interventions. Only 22 showed positive effects on presenteeism or productivity. Its authors are clear on something worth repeating: no isolated initiative, on its own, guarantees lower absenteeism or better productivity. What does work depends on organizational factors sustained over time, not on individual behavior at a single point in time.

The mistake of treating the week as the entire program

When health week is reported internally and externally as evidence that "we're already doing something for wellness," it stops being a piece of the strategy and becomes, without anyone intentionally deciding so, the entire strategy. Budget, energy, and attention are concentrated into five days, and the rest of the year remains exactly the same as before.

The variable that truly drives results

It's not about offering one-off intensity; it should be sustained infrastructure. A nutrition talk on a Tuesday in September doesn't change an eating pattern built over months. A one-week step challenge doesn't create a movement habit that outlasts October. What actually does is ensuring that initial momentum has somewhere to go afterward: follow-up, reminders, continuity.

Why this isn't a criticism of having a health week

It's worth doing. It's a genuine signal of intent, and it's often the first step that sparks something that didn't exist before. Treating it as the finish line, rather than the starting point, is where the mistake lies.

Of everything you organized this health week, what will still exist next week?

If your company organizes a health week, at Zen To Go we complement that specific event with monthly follow-ups, so that what starts in one week is sustained throughout the rest of the year.
